Access to O&SI SAF METOP wind and sea surface temperature data

METOP is the first of a new series of weather satellites operated by EUMETSAT. It embeds two relevant sensors for oceanagraphy : a scatterometer for sea surface wind and sea ice measurement, and an infrared radiometer allowing to retrieve the sea surface temperature at high resolution and over the whole oceans. The ocean data for METOP are produced by the O&SI SAF and these data are now accessible for extraction and visualization through Naiad portal.


The Meteorological Operational satellite programme (MetOp) is a new series of three weather satellites that has been jointly established by ESA and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The first satellite of this serie, METOP-A, includes several sensors of interest for oceanography such as an AVHRR for sea surface temperature and the ASCAT scatterometer for the retrieval of ocean surface wind vectors and the observation of sea-ice.

The ocean METOP products are generated and delivered by the EUMETSAT Ocean & Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (O&SI SAF). EUMETSAT has supported the development of Naiad system to allow the distribution of some of these products through the dataminer. The products currently available through Naiad are :

  • the full resolution Sea Surface Temperature (SST) swath data from AVHRR instrument (EUR-L2P-METOP_A) : these high resolution data have a 1km resolution over a 1800 km wide swath. The orbits are splitted into files (or granules) corresponding to a 3 minutes long acquisition. These data are produced by Meteo-France (Lannion) on behalf of the O&SI SAF.
  • the 25km resolution wind vectors (speed and direction at ocean surface) from ASCAT scatterometer. They are produced by KNMI on behalf of the O&SI SAF.

When registered into Naiad system, the data are splitted into 500kmx500km tiles and properties (or tags) on the content of each tile are computed in order for users to specify fine spatial selection or more content oriented queries. Such properties include for instance estimation of the cloud contamination for SST data (to avoid downloading files with poor data content), or mean wind speed or standard deviation for ASCAT wind data. Currently the AVHRR and ASCAT data are ingested in real-time into the Naiad system and therefore accessible straight away. We are being processing the backlog up to the beginning of METOP mission and then all mission archive will be accessible.

All intellectual property rights of the OSI SAF products belong to EUMETSAT. The use of these products is granted to every interested user, free of charge.
